    SLC WEEK IN THE SKY

Another cloudy week, so I'll give you a constellation that you should be able to glimpse this week: the Manta Ray. Never heard of the Manta Ray? Any time in the evening, look in the eastern sky to see Orion, easily identified by the 3 stars of the belt, which are nearly vertical in mid-evening right now. Around those three stars are four stars which form a somewhat distorted box, outlining Orion. Now take the top one of those four stars, and look diagonally up to the left. You should see a very flat, broad "w" shape made of 5 bluish stars (counting the one you started with), about twice as long as Orion itself. (One of the stars may be a little faint, but from a dark location at SLC you should be able to see it.) It doesn't take much imagination to see a blue ma! nta ray swimming through the stars. Why have you never heard of this co! nstellation? Because SLC student Rachel Bergquist invented it, as part of her conference project "Recreating the Zodiac." If you were born in June, it's your (new) Sun sign! To learn more, see Rachel's poster at the Poster Session.

WOULD SOMEONE YOU KNOW LIKE TO GET THE SLC WEEK IN SCIENCE?

If someone you know would like to get this weekly summary of science events on and off-campus, encourage them to go to our page of MySLC and sign up!

    ______________________________________________________________________________________

This is the NON-SLC edition of the SLC Week in Science. If you have access to MySLC, please sign on, go to Campus Life, then Campus Groups, the Browse Groups, and then join SciMath. The non-SLC version of the mailing does not include information like deadlines for poster session abstracts, summer research application procedures, tutoring information, etc..

This message has been distributed through SciMath, SLC's electronic mailing list whose sole aim is to keep members of the college community informed about science-related events on and off-campus. If you have information about an upcoming science event for a future mailing, have comments or questions about SciMath, or wish to be removed from this mailing list, please contact SciMath moderator Scott Calvin in Physics (scalvin@slc.edu).

The standard comment is anonymous, the exception has a name.

To identify yourself without having an account, choose Name/URL. You can leave out the URL. Sometimes it's nice to use a pseudonym instead of being totally anonymous--that way you can say multiple things as the same person or character.

If you want to be reachable privately without revealing your identity to the group, make yourself a throwaway email account. It takes five minutes. You can link to it if you use the Name/URL option.

If you're signed into your Blogger/Google account and want to be anonymous, make sure to change the Comment as option. It'll identify you by default.
